                                              News Release

Shelby County 109 Board Purchases Land for Future Site of Combined Recycling and Convenience Center

SHELBYVILLE, KY.  Shelby County 109 Taxing District Chairman Rusty Newton announced that the 109 Board of Directors have purchased 25.191 acres located on Windhurst Way, off of Old Brunerstown Road,  for the future use of a combined Recycling and Convenience Center for the citizens of Shelby County.

Newton stated that having a combined facility will allow citizens to dispose of recycling and bulk item trash in one convenient location.  Currently, the Recycling Center is located at 98 7th Street in Shelbyville and the Convenience Center is located at 1570 Kings HWY in Waddy.

Newton further states that on behalf of the Board, “We are excited about the future site.  The combined location will provide us with a centrally located facility which will be easily accessible to the citizen’s of Shelby County. Combining these two facilities will strengthen our community’s recycling efforts, allowing people to recycle items that they normally would dispose of as trash at the Convenience Center. Furthermore, the new site will provide a safer drop off location for residents.  It is in the best interest of the Shelby County 109 Board and the citizen’s of Shelby County to provide a facility that is safe, efficient, and easily accessible.”

The current Convenience Center in Waddy, is positioned parallel to a railroad track, requiring residents to cross the track in order to gain access to the facility.  This poses a potential safety risk, in addition to a liability, when customers are forced to wait in line on the road, and aforementioned railroad track, for access to the facility.

Currently, the Shelby County 109 Board is in negotiations with an engineering firm for the development of the new facility.  Preliminary renderings have been introduced and construction on the new site could begin as early as spring 2012.
