Shelby County Judge
Executive’s Office Teams with Lexington-Fayette Urban
League to Offer Jobs for Senior Citizens
SHELBYVILLE, KY. Shelby
County Judge- Executive Rob Rothenburger announced
Tuesday in the regular Shelby County Fiscal Court
meeting that his office would be working in
collaboration with the Lexington-Fayette Urban League to
offer individuals 55 and older that qualify, an
opportunity to work twenty (20) hours a week for up to
one year.
The Senior Community
Service Employment Training Program (SCSEP) is an
on-the-job training program for low-income persons 55
years of age and older. The program emphasizes three
goals: 1. to provide income and gainful part-time
subsidized work for low-income mature workers; 2. to
demonstrate how low-income mature workers can help
respond to the delivery of community service needs by
working in human service jobs; 3. to transition mature
workers into quality jobs in the private, public and
non-profit sectors through training and job finding
assistance.
To achieve these goals
SCSEP and the Shelby County Judge-Executive’s Office
will place persons 55 years and older with non-profit
organizations and government agencies to receive
on-the-job training through community service. SCSEP
participants will work twenty hours a week and are paid
minimum wages.
County Judge-Executive
Rob Rothenburger states, “We have seniors that want to
work, but are facing barriers such as age, lack of
skills and/or education. The Senior Community
Employment Training Program will help overcome these
barriers by providing paid on-the-job training, computer
skills classes, employability classes and GED tutoring.”
The program has been
funded for ten (10) positions in Shelby County with the
following agencies and organizations willing to
participate; Shelby County Emergency Medical Services,
Shelby County Property Valuation Office, Shelby County
Animal Control Services, Shelby County Parks and
Recreation, Multi-Purpose Community Action Agency,
Shelby County Triple S Planning and Zoning Commission
and Shelby Prevention.
The Lexington-Fayette
Urban League is a non-profit organization with programs
designed to help low-income and at risk individuals and
seniors meet their educational, financial, and housing
needs. The Senior Community Service Employment Training
Program has been an Urban League non-profit program
since 1987 sponsored by the National Council on Aging
and funded by the U. S. Department of Labor.
Individuals interested
in participating in this program should contact the
Shelby County Judge-Executive’s Office or the Lexington
