Fiscal Court Recognizes Outgoing Magistrates

SHELBYVILLE, KY.  Tuesday’s Shelby County Fiscal Court meeting marked an end for two of Shelby County’s most renowned political figures.  Cordell “Cordy” Armstrong and Betty Curtsinger reflected on their time on Fiscal Court and the changes that have taken place throughout Shelby County during their tenure.

Armstrong served as District 4 magistrate for 25 years and witnessed firsthand the turnover of elected officials over the past 3 decades.  “During my time as Magistrate, I’ve served with three county attorneys, two county judge-executives, 14 magistrates, and one county clerk,” Armstrong reflected during Tuesday’s meeting.

Armstrong acknowledged that one of the most significant accomplishments that he and the court have made would be the paving of all county roads.  He stated that when he first took office, gravel roads were commonplace and recalls the Road Department utilizing the chip and seal method, a far less efficient way of maintaining roadway surfaces.

Curtsinger who served as magistrate for District 5 for 3 consecutive terms was the first female elected as magistrate on the Shelby County Fiscal Court.  Curtsinger in her address to the court and audience recognized the importance and contributions of all the county employees that served and have been role models in their profession.

Curtsinger was instrumental in the drafting and passage of Shelby County’s adult entertainment ordinance, restricting location of such establishments, and codification of all county ordinances, making them accessible to all citizen’s of the county.

Shelby County Judge-Executive Rob Rothenburger praised the efforts, contributions, and leadership of both Armstrong and Curtsinger during the fiscal court meeting.  “Both Betty and Cordy have the utmost integrity and respect from the citizens and their fellow colleagues on fiscal court.  Shelby County has definitely benefited from their presence… They will be missed.”

The 2011 – 2014 fiscal court members will be sworn into office on January 2nd, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Shelby County Courthouse in the Circuit Court room.  The public is invited.
