(November 6, 2009) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet
recently awarded a contract for the widening of
Interstate 64 from 1/2 mile west of the Jefferson/Shelby
County line to the Simpsonville exit in Shelby County
(mile points 23.2 to 28.1). Work will begin the week
of November 9th to widen the roadway to three lanes in
each direction. The new lanes will be constructed in
the interstate median.
Two lanes of traffic
will be maintained in each direction on I-64 during the
majority of the construction. Lane closures will be
necessary during the mobilization and demobilization of
the project and will occur during overnight hours.
Lane closures are
currently scheduled in the left lane for both directions
beginning Monday, November 9th through Saturday,
November 14th. The lane closures will occur from 7:00
p.m. each evening until 6:00 a.m. the following
morning. The speed limit in the work zone will be
reduced to 55 MPH for the duration of the project.
Gohmann Asphalt and
Construction was awarded the contract for this project
in the amount of $35.6 million. Construction will be
completed in the summer of 2011.
This work is adjacent
to the current widening project on I-64 from the Gene
Snyder Freeway to just west of the Shelby/Jefferson
County line (mile points 18.8 to 23.2). Gohmann Asphalt
and Construction is also the contractor on this project
which is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2010.
The actual starting
date and duration of this work may be adjusted if
inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
