Recycling Center Adjusts to Fallen Market

SHELBYVILLE, KY.  Shelby County Solid Waste Director Russell Thomas establishes a Recycling Center Plan of Action to be implemented immediately at the Shelby County Recycling Center in order to accommodate the fallen market.

The nation’s current economic status has negatively affected the market for recyclable materials.  Previously, the Shelby County Solid Waste Program has sold collected recyclable commodities to various vendors in exchange for a pre-determined fee.  The market for these same commodities is now rendering remarkably lower revenues for items.  Furthermore, certain materials, such as cardboard, no longer produce revenue for recycling programs nationwide, but instead a disposal fee is now being charged for their removal.

In order to accommodate the adverse market for recyclable materials, Shelby County Solid Waste Director Russell Thomas has developed a plan for the Recycling Center that will save the Shelby County 109 / Solid Waste Board additional costs.  The plan of action entails baling and then storing materials such as cardboard, plastic, and newspaper until the market recovers or until a large enough quantity of the material is collected in order to produce revenue.  Aluminum and steel cans will be crushed and also stored until a large quantity is obtained.

Thomas states, “The residents of Shelby County have shown great dedication in their Recycling endeavors.  We encourage everyone to recycle and to spread the word about recycling.  Despite the pending market hardship, we look forward to a quick recovery and remain prepared to accommodate the residents of Shelby County’s recycling needs.”

The Shelby County Recycling Center will still be accepting all recyclable materials from Shelby County residents.  The plan of action has been implemented to accommodate the downfall of the market and carry the Shelby County Solid Waste Department through the current crises and into the future.
