Ham Radio
A very important part of the Shelby
County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is its affiliation with the
Stubblefield Repeater Club, which is Shelby County's Amateur Radio
Club. Amateur radio operators are known as "Hams". Our
Hams meet at the Emergency Management Agency on the second Tuesday
of every month at 7:00 p.m. You are invited to come visit and
even join. Classes are offered that will assist you in
obtaining your Amateur Radio license so you, too, can be a Ham!
Here are some of the things Hams offer:
-
A weather net during severe
weather with the most up-to-date weather information in Shelby
County. This activates ham operators to observe weather
activity in their area (weather spotters) and report this
information to the control point. The net control
operator, in turn, reports this information to EMA and the
national weather service. You can listen to all this
information and activity on your scanner at 147.00 MHz.
-
A weekly Disaster and Emergency
Services radio net every Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. on 147.00 MHz.
-
Participation in the annual Field
Day amateur radio contest the last Saturday of June each year
sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) in which
several thousand hams throughout the United States and around
the world participate. This exciting form of communication
is made possible by short wave transmissions without the need
for telephone lines, satellites or the internet. Two-way
radios, antenna and proper training are all that is needed and
that is exactly why this event exists to develop and keep up
skills necessary to continue communicating even when normal ways
of communication are lost, for example, in cases of natural
disasters as tornados or floods.
-
Assisting EMA in the installation
and on-going maintenance of its radio equipment, portable
generators and other equipment.
-
The ability to set up a
communications system during as emergency situation within an
hour when all other communications (regular phones, cellular
phones, public communications systems) are down.
-
Can communicate around the world,
including the NASA Space station.
